DREAM SPOT FOR SALMON FISHING
Karluk Fishing The Best.

The Picture on the left is the Author Norman Blair. The picture was taken last year at an Alaskan Native village of Karluk. In the background you can see the old village of Karluk. Fishing here is great. They have all the salmon running up this river one of which is my favorite the king salmon.

There are five different kinds of salmon that keep anglers busy here in Kodiak. They are the King, coho, sockeye, pinks and the chum salmon.

The king salmon is the biggest of all salmon and can put up a pretty fight. Hook one of these babies and you better be willing to hold on because it will fight.

The coho or silver salmon salmon is by far the hardest fighter of all and is a delight to cantch. They are very acrobatic and very smart. They have silver bodies with a black back accompanied by irregular black spots.

The sockeye or the red salmon is the best to eat. No other salmon tastes like a good red. They are the hardest to catch among the five salmons. They are plankton eaters. They too have silver bodies with a dark back with little black spots. They are also the first to hit the rivers around Mothers day.

The pink salmon or the humpee is by far the most abundant and the easiest to catch. They pretty much bite on anything you throw at them. They are called humpee because the males develope a big hump on their backs when they start to spawn. fun fish to fish for if you are in the mood for catch and release. Great for the kids.

The chum or dog salmon is about the size of a silver. They can surely get pretty ugly. When the male start to spawn they develop alot of canine teeth hens the name dog salmon. Dont like to catch them on my line. The kids love it especially the boys.
